We have just returned from a lovely holiday. First we had a few days in Devon visiting friends and then we went to Haven in North Wales with my family.

Considering we live in Nottinghamshire, this was quite the road trip! We usually try to find a way around driving. We worked out that adding our Wales holiday onto our Devon visit would save us 2 hours travelling than travelling each journey separately. We even looked at getting a ferry from Devon to North Wales but we would have had to go via France and Ireland. 🙂

My husband once flew from Manchester to Exeter and we often try to work out train journeys. We have also added a holiday to Spain onto a friends wedding in Cornwall to cut down travel time. We hired a car so we wouldn’t have the problem of having our car abandoned in Cornwall then flew from Exeter to Spain then from Spain to home.

Last year when we travelled to Cornwall it seemed to take forever! We stopped overnight in Bristol on the way which helped but we still seemed to be on the road for ages.

I have heard of people setting off at the time their children would normally go to bed so that they would sleep on the way. We thought this sounded like a good idea so instead of travelling on the Thursday we set off on Wednesday instead.

I packed a picnic and we left home at 6pm. We had our picnic in the car to kill some time and then, at 7.30pm, we stopped at a service station. Bob was already in her pyjamas so she had a wee wee and a wash and cleaned her teeth. We got back in the car and crossed our fingers.

At 9.30pm Bob was still awake and I began to think that she would be awake for the whole journey. Luckily we had a DVD that kept Bob entertained and she was an angel all the way.

She finally fell asleep at 10pm and when we arrived at our hotel half an hour later and I worried she would wake up. I managed to get her into bed without waking her and we felt pleased with our successful road trip! I know Bob didn’t sleep but she was as good as gold!

We decided to split the journey to North Wales over 2 days as this would take about 5 and a half hours. We didn’t want to leave late again as we weren’t sure where we were going to stay. We set off on Sunday morning in search of something fun to do on the way.

Again, Bob was a star and we travelled 3 and a half hours before we’d had enough. We then found a hotel with a pub and a soft play area across from it. It was nice to split up the journey and for Bob to blow off some steam.

After our travels the 2 hours that we had left to drive seemed like a trip to the local shop.

I was really pleased that our journeys were successful as now that my friend lives in Devon we can go and visit more often. If Bob had been a nightmare or we had experienced car trouble we may have been reluctant to attempt a long journey again.
