After our abroad holiday disaster last year we were determined to find fun closer to home. We definitely managed it and have just returned from a wonderful two weeks away.

I think this is definitely the way forward for us and we are planning to use our caravan much more next year. When it was just the two of us I used to sit in the caravan wondering why we weren’t in a hotel. Now we have Bob caravanning is perfect! She absolutely loves it and doesn’t have to be confined to a hotel room.

I think that the main down side to holidays in the U.K. (apart from our changeable weather) is the travelling. I much prefer travelling in the car than on a plane as flying scares me but it means lots of driving for my husband. I offer to share but he knows he is a terrible backseat driver so he prefers to drive himself (unless he want to have a drink).

I know that travelling abroad takes a long time as you have to be at the airport a few hours before but you are free to wander around the shops and then watch films during the flight. Driving can be tiring and it is also harder to keep children entertained in the car.

We broke up the journey and had quite an exciting road trip. We stayed at a hotel that was connected to a pub with a soft play area in Bristol. We then travelled to Coombe Mill. After a lovely week there we travelled to Devon to stay with friends and then I thought that going to Peppa Pig World would break up the journey home.

I miscalculated this slightly. I had somehow convinced myself that Peppa Pig World was an hour from our friends house. I was so desperate for Bob to go there I think my heart messed with my brain! When I checked our journey on the day that we were going to Peppa Pig World I was surprised to see a journey time of 3 hours staring back at me. Oops! It wasn’t 3 hours closer to home either.

Luckily Bob was an angel in the car. She watched DVD’s, we sang songs and played games. When she became unsettled we stopped for a break. I usually needed to stop before she did. she even managed a few power naps which is very out of character.

There are so many lovely places to travel in the U.K. I miss relaxing abroad holidays and I am looking forward to going again when Bob is old enough to relax. When is that? Please don’t tell me 18!

We may manage a trip to Disneyland Paris next year as I think Bob would love it there. It is expensive but I think there are some good deals available if we go out of season. If my husband is on the laptop 9 times put of 10 he is researching holidays to Disneyland Paris.

He has been looking at ways to cut down travel costs finding deals on travel insurance from Debenhams travel where kids go free and trying to work out if there’s a cheap time to travel on the Eurostar. I would much prefer to travel that way than drive. It would take us weeks to get there with all our little pitstops. 🙂

I love holidays! They are fabulous when we are on them, they make me more settled at home when we return and they are great fun to plan!
