Travelling can be an exciting way to experience a new environment and culture as a family. It can provide us with an opportunity to rediscover our lust for life or simply to fully relax and rejuvenate. But it is widely reported that many people find travelling tiring and stressful. Travelling with children or as a family can be especially difficult if we haven’t prepared. The destination may be perfect and peaceful, but if our journey is hard it can put a dampener on the whole trip. With so much to consider when planning a holiday including flights and activities, we can easily overlook the journey itself. But with some additional consideration and attention, the journey can be smooth and pleasant for the whole family. Read on to discover some of the most underrated tips for making a family flight easier.

Plan Well In Advance

Last minute bookings and deals have soared in popularity over the years. But there are still certain advantages for taking your time when planning a holiday. You are more likely to find accommodation and flight times to suit you, for example, and are unlikely to have to compromise heavily. Last minute opportunities are rarely flexible. They can often result in awkward travel times or arriving in airports that are far away from our intended destination. If children have been patient for the duration of the flight, they may find additional travelling time frustrating! Leave yourself enough time to read the small print of your flights. Ensure that you do not then have to take a long journey from the airport to your destination where possible. If you and the children are already tired from your flight, this can be a real inconvenience. Planning in advance will also give you the opportunity to ask questions and contact providers if necessary. If you are travelling with children or have special travel requirements, there is often additional help available. Maybe there is the opportunity for an early check-in, for example. This can make it much easier for children to relax and play without the rush of finding the right terminal. Minimising the chaos that surrounds travel gives you an opportunity to research the flight more fully. You and the famly are far more likely to arrive positive and well-rested as a result.

Travel First Class

If it is financially possible, flying first class can minimise or remove a lot of travelling complaints. Many families swear by flying first class as an extra investment in their holiday. They all arrive at their destination having eaten and slept well with few stresses and strains. First class cabins are often more spacious and can allow for you to relax effectively. Children can play and enjoy entertainment without disturbing other passengers. Long haul flights can often leave everyone feeling stiff and nauseous. Children are able to sleep more deeply in the quiet first class cabins and so are parents. Then when you arrive at your destination, the whole family will feel ready for the day and can immediately make the most of the holiday. First class travel often also gives us access to first class lounges, early check-in and more. We should check with our provider what the specific benefits are for families and make full use of them.

Pack Intelligently

Many passengers make things difficult for themselves by neglecting to pack intelligently. With children, it is perhaps especially important to have games, treats, and entertainment on hand. If they are hoping to read, listen to music, or play games during the flight, it makes sense to pack these items close to the top. That way, you are not struggling in a tight space to find items buried at the bottom of a bag.
