New York is a popular feature on many of our fantasy travel lists. If you’re lucky enough to visit the Big Apple, there’s almost too much to see and do. While this is a welcome dilemma, it can also make planning a little tricky. If you’re a New York novice, here are some tips to help you plan the perfect urban escape.

When To Go

NYC is enchanting at any time of year, but it’s particularly spectacular in the run-up to the festive period. There’s no way of escaping elaborate light shows and you’ll see some of the most incredible shop window displays of all time. Spring and autumn are also ideal times to visit. You’ll enjoy long, warm days without the oppressive heat of the height of the summer. If you don’t have children, avoid the school holidays and take advantage of lower prices.

Where To Stay

If you’re eager to tick off the old favourites and stick to the tourist trail, it’s best to stay central. The infrastructure is fantastic and you can travel across the city easily, but nothing beats a walk around the urban labyrinth. Popular areas include Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Upper West Side.

There are options to suit every budget and a broad spectrum of styles. From budget hostels and low key lodgings to opulent 5-star hotels, there’s something for everyone. If you are travelling in a group, or you’re hoping to stay for a while, it may be worth investigating apartments in New York.

What To See

There is absolutely no chance of ever running out of things to do and see in New York. If you’re visiting for the first time, you’ll probably come armed with a list as long as your arm. Do some research before you travel and plan a rough itinerary. The most popular tourist sights and attractions include:

The Statue of Liberty
Empire State Building
Central Park
Times Square
Broadway
Wall Street and the Financial District
American Museum of Natural History
Metropolitan Museum of Art
World Trade Center Memorial

Try and organise your plans, so that you can hop from one place to another. If you’re pushed for time, don’t forget you can use the metro to get around rapidly. Try to avoid hailing cabs during peak times, as the traffic is notoriously heavy.

Look out for details of events, festivals and concerts that are taking place while you’re in NYC. You’ll often find that there’s a huge range of choices on any given day. During your stay, channel the New York way of living and sample indulgent brunches and strong coffee. Try giant pizzas, flavoured pretzels and freshly baked bagels. In the evening, enjoy the city views with drinks at a trendy rooftop bar.

I’ve always wanted to visit NYC, but I fear it would be so scarily big and busy! I suppose that’s part of its charm though. Great post!
