I have been wondering whether to continue with my Can’t Beat The Classics feature. Although I enjoy researching and remembering all of the old programmes I am worried that it makes my blog a bit wishy washy, as it is not about motherhood. Please let me know your thoughts.

I woke up singing this theme tune this morning so I saw that as a sign to continue, at least for one more week. It is a popular classic that, I think, many of you will remember. Set in Mr. Grimes Toy Factory it shows us that being different isn’t a bad thing! It’s The Raggy Dolls!

The Raggy Dolls was first shown in 1986 and more than 100 episodes were made! This is the first episode in which the dolls find, repair and fly a toy aeroplane. After watching this episode, I was surprised to realise that one man, Neil Innes from Monty Python, provided all of the voices! As a child I didn’t notice.

I love this programme and think that the message behind it is a very important one! Just singing the theme tune makes me feel better! Try it! You might like it! 😉

Lyrics (found here)

It’s not much of a life when you’re just a pretty face
Just to be whoever you are is no disgrace
Don’t be scared if you don’t fit in
Look who’s in the reject bin!
It’s the Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls Dolls like you and me
Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls made imperfectly
So if you got a bump on your nose or a lump on your toes
Do not despair
Be like the Raggy Dolls, and say I just don’t care
Cause Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls
Are happy just to be
Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls,
Dolls like you and me!

It’s not much of a life when you’re just a pretty face
Just to be whoever you are is no disgrace
Look around and you will find
People of every kind
Like the Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls
Dolls like you and me
Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls
Made imperfectly
So if you’re not at ease with your nobbly knees
and your fingers are all thumbs
Stand on your two left feet,
and join our Raggy Doll chums
Cause Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls
Are happy just to be
Raggy Dolls, Raggy Dolls
Dolls like you and me!

1986? Really? Gah, I feel really old now! But I have such fond memories of the Raggy Dolls. It was definitely one of my favourite childhood programmes.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think it matters if you have posts or ongoing features which aren’t related to motherhood. It’s your space so you should totally fill it with anything and everything that you like.

If you did want to try and tie it in more, maybe you could add a bit where you say if there’s any children’s programmes that are comparable to the one you’re posting about for kids nowadays? So, is there anything around that sends the same messages as the programmes of our childhood did?

I do think it’s lovely to be able to have a trip down memory road though 😀

Thank you. That’s a good idea. Just need to find my passion for children’s t.v. nowadays. Love the old school stuff so I really enjoy researching it. Not sure I could get as excited about 3rd and Bird. ;o) Don’t panic about the date! I’m sure they repeated it for many years!!! Thanks for your comment.

Keep it! I think it’s good when a blog has something different every now and then. And I agree about the trip down memory lane. You could always add a “Bob’s Opinion” bit when you show her these gems and get her to babble a few critics words…. xx

I think its nice to have something different on a blog- like mine is primarily about parenthood but I love adding fashion post and other random things. You should definitely keep it.x
