Dear Bob,

You have wanted a baby brother or sister for a long time. I took a little more persuading than you did but fortunately I am now happy with the idea.

Very soon our world will change. You will no longer be my only child. I will be a mummy of 2 and you will be a big sister!

Later today I am going into hospital to have your baby brother. Again you are more excited about this prospect than I am. I know you will be eagerly awaiting news of his arrival and I can’t wait for you to come to the hospital to meet him.

I know you are going to make a wonderful big sister. You already sing wonderful songs to your baby brother and stroke and kiss my tummy in a beautiful, loving way! You talk about how you will take care of him and how he can come into your bed if he wakes up in the night.

Although our little world will change dramatically, I want you to know that I will always love you! Even if I seem cranky as I haven’t slept for 3 weeks. What am I talking about! Your baby brother is going to sleep as no two babies are the same.

Your sleeping has improved tremendously but last night you crept into our room around midnight. I think it was because you knew it was our last night as a family of 3. I scooped you up into our bed and gave you a huge cuddle!

I also want you to know that I have more than enough love for both of you! When you entered this world my heart grew to at least three times it’s size. I used to worry that I would never be able to love another child as much as I love you but I know that when your baby brother is born my heart will swell again and there will be plenty of love to go around.

I am now capable of loving someone more than I ever thought possible and that is all thanks to you. Thank you for being my star and thank you for making me a mummy.

I know that your baby brother will be the youngest but don’t worry. You will always be my baby girl! You are my first baby, my first child and the first person who taught me just how much love it is possible to feel!

I love you baby!

xxx

Awww, I love the photo’s at the bottom. You never know what to expect when you have another, but in my experience the bigger ones have always all loved the little ones dearly from the first sight – and as you say, even before then 🙂

She seems to love having him and often thanks me for giving her a baby brother. We are trying our best to make her feel special and making sure we have time with her. She can be a bit of a madam at the minute but maybe that comes with the big sister territory. 🙂 xx

What a lovely post! My oldest was 1.5 when her brother was born and ignored him for the first few months. Now that she’s 4 I know she would be really excited for a younger brother or sister! It’s so lovely your little one can be involved in the anticipation and getting ready stage!

Such a very lovely letter and Bob will make the best big sister, I’m sure. I remember the last week as a family of 3 and it was a strange kind of feeling. Excitement, end of an era, nerves, all wrapped into one. Now that Baby E has arrived it feels a new strange lovely feeling that we’re still getting used to. Hope you’re all doing well xx
