A-Girl's-Best-Friend

As you probably all know by now, I have quite a few pets. I love animals and I think pets are a lovely addition to any household. Today I have a guest post about how pets can also help with physical and mental health to share with you.

Guest Post

Pets are not only wonderful additions to the family home but they can also be physically and mentally beneficial.

Of course the physical benefits come down to taking the pup (or pups in my case) for a walk, chasing a cat that has a mouse in its mouth or a rabbit that has decided that they just had to use the whole of the neighbourhood to train for the bunny Olympics and not forgetting the various games of tug and war, whether intentional or not.

So, how do they help mentally? I can see you all shaking your heads indisagreement and cursing those pets who are currently driving you nuts, but believe me, they do more good than harm!

Pets have been proven to lower heart rates and blood pressure, particularly as you get older. This is simply down to petting and stroking pets, the soft motion and the calm state help relax you.

This has been so affective in fact that some care homes have started to allow residents to bring their pets and others, such as Sunrise Senior Living care homes, have residential pets at their communities meaning that even the pet-less can experience some puppy love now and then!

Pet therapy isn’t just for the elderly, pets have also been used to help autistic children come out of their shell as well as having a soothing effect for those that feel stressed or uncomfortable. They can also provide children with ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) a routine to help them focus.

So as you sit there at your computer, tablet, smart phone or laptop while your kitten is scratching up the walls pretending to be Spiderman, or your pup has just dug up your last flower in your flower bed, remember, they are worth it.

I had BD overnight last night, this morning we spent 15 minutes sat looking at the garden together while I stroked him and drank my coffee – best way to start the morning!!
