Going on a family vacation is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful for the parents. With so much to arrange, the stress of getting to the airport on time and not wanting to forget anything, it can all start to feel like it’s not much fun at all.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare and pack for your trip so that everyone—including you—has a great time on your family vacation.

Sort Out the Logistics Early

The first thing you need to do is choose a destination where everyone will be happy. For a family vacation, this could be somewhere with a beach or somewhere with lots for kids to do, such as a top family vacation destination like Orlando.

Once you’re happy with your choice of destination, you’ll need to find a suitable hotel. Choose somewhere that is family friendly, comfortable, has great reviews, and is easy to reach. Also look for somewhere with good dining options and amenities like a swimming pool to keep the kids happy. For example, Residence Inn Marriott could be a good option if you visit Orlando.

Then you should plan the logistics of getting to the airport, getting from the airport to the hotel, hiring a car, and anything else you need to arrange to prepare your trip properly and leave no stone unturned.

Plan Your Activities

Wherever you are going, make sure there are plenty of things to keep the kids happy. Create a list of everything there is to do in your chosen destination, and go over the attractions with your kids so that they can have a say in what they want to see and do.

Create a rough plan for each day so that you know you have got every day covered. But also be flexible—there might be days you just want to hang out at the hotel, for example, so make sure you also play it by ear.

Create a Packing List

Packing is a big part of going away on a family vacation, so start planning your packing a long time before you go away. You could use a packing app on your phone to help you (PackPoint is a good option), or just brainstorm your own list.

Make sure you take all the things that your kids will need, including toys, games, tablets, clothes, and more. Read a guide to help you if you need somewhere to start.

Don’t Forget Medication

If anyone takes any medication, pack these as well, and take a prescription from your doctor. Also, if you’re going overseas, know what the medication is called in the country you are visiting.

Also pack essentials like sunscreen, a small first-aid kit, and ibuprofen, and know what the right doses are for your children.

Get to the Airport Early

Finally, plan your trip to the airport and plan to arrive with plenty of time. You will need at least an hour longer than if you were traveling on your own, especially if you are traveling with young children.

Use your preferred mapping app to find out what the traffic is like to the airport, and be prepared to adjust your plans if necessary. Google Maps is great, but there are others to choose from. Arrive with plenty of time so you can take it slow and avoid rushing, and prepare for going through security in advance because this can take a while.

Then you’re all set to go on your vacation—have a great time together without forgetting anything!
